 Classics Reading Project

The English Team together with the Library team initiated a Classics Reading Revival Project in  Classes IX and XI. The inspiration behind the project was the new collection of leatherbound  books acquired by the school. 

Beginning from the first week of August, the students of Class IX and XI were taken group-wise to Minoti Didi’s office where the collection is kept and a reading corner is being  developed. The respective English facilitators of each group conducted the sessions. The  discussion began with what makes classics ‘classics’. Attention of the children was drawn to  the quality of paper, print, illustrations/photographs, the embossed leatherbound cover and  even the ‘smell’ of the books in this collection. Each facilitator chose a book from the  collection to be introduced to the students by reading out chosen excerpts from the book.  The books included A Tale of Two Cities, The Picture of Dorian Grey, Frankenstein, Call of the  Wild and 1984. The facilitators talked about the context and the relevance of the themes explored in these books bringing out the timelessness of these books.
 
In the session conducted for Azure group (Class XI) by Ishita Didi on Wednesday, 9th August  2023, featuring George Orwell’s 1984, the presence of Minoti Didi and Paro Anand Didi added  layers to the discussion, helping the students connect interesting aspects of the novel to  current realities. 

The sessions aim to revitalise the interest of the students in reading in general and in classics  in particular. The sessions will continue with a different book chosen for each term.
