Design and Dreams 2022

On Friday, 23rd December, 2022, four young designers from different fields of art and design, held an audience of students and parents, of Classes X to XII, spellbound for an hour and a half, at the second Design and Dreams event held at Shikshantar. All of them ex-students of Shikshantar, these immensely talented and confident youngsters showcased their work and explorations in college and beyond, giving the aspiring young artists in the audience an insight into what it means and takes to get into a design course at a good college, what the course involves, and what lies ahead.

Dway Lunkad, who is studying Sculpture and Film making at Rhode Island School of Design, New York, totally wowed the audience with his amazing work, his wide range of interesting projects and experiments, and his engrossing talk. Nandini Mediratta, who has recently passed out of NIFT, Mumbai, with Fashion Communication as her specialisation, and Pragya Saboo, currently in the final year at NIFT, Delhi, studying Accessory design, took the floor together, explaining in detail how to prepare for the entrance, what the courses are about, the strengths and advantages of being in Shikshantar, and side by side, shared their varied and interesting projects.

Last but not the least, Zoeanna Upadhyay, an architect in the making from Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, showed us what it takes to study architecture, and the kind of new ideas, concepts and projects that a budding architect would expect to engage with, in a contemporary architecture college.

What came out very clearly was the rigour and tremendous hard work that is an integral part of any design course, and the three quintessential requirements of a designer- self-motivation, passion and individuality/originality, to stand out or make a mark in the field. The students and parents attending the session were tremendously appreciative of the in-depth and candid sharing by the speakers, and found it to be very helpful!
