Third Open House Interaction Session Class - I

Session: ‘Erikson, Behaviour & Children- children, childhood and parenting’

The engaging session on psychosocial developmental stages of Erikson’s theory was facilitated by Seema didi. The session began with a reflective journey by going back to the years of childhood and reflecting on our life journey, relationships and environment. Didi took our attention to various
milestones of our life journey that created many perceptions of ‘Self’. Parents enthusiastically participated and shared their responses in a word web representing the child ‘Me’ and what constitutes my environment.

With a PowerPoint presentation, Seema didi took us through the eight stages of Erikson’s psychosocial development theory with relatable examples. How each stage is concerned with becoming competent in an area of life. If the stage is handled well, the child / individual will feel a sense of mastery. Therefore, it is so important to provide a nurturing environment that empowers the child / individual in their growth and development.

Parents were divided into four groups to ponder collectively on different case studies based on situations observed in the classrooms. One by one, all the groups presented their case studies and reflections on the behavioural manifestations, followed by a discussion related to our role as parents and facilitators to help children transition through these developmental stages.

The session was given a closure by reflecting that there is never a fixed strategy or a way out. This is a journey and we can rebuild ourselves if provided by a nurturing environment.
