2nd Parent Open House - Class I
The parents of Class I children recently attended the 2nd Parent Open House to explore their ties to the Hindi language. It was an experience filled with creative expression from both the parents and group didis.
Seema Didi spoke to the parents about the importance of language in a child’s growth as they become more and more inquisitive. Language plays a key role in finding a place in the social fabric and inclusion.
Through a story ‘क्या तुम हो मेरी दादी’, Didi narrated the journey of little Avni whose parents helped her understand and deal with her grandmother’s passing. It was not just about a reading in Hindi language but about building a gentle connection with real life situations through a story.
It brought back touching memories of childhood from the parents and they shared that the experience also taught them to deal with similar situations in future.
In another experience around a roleplay ‘लटकापुर की सैर’, the Class I didis illustrated the link between ‘स्वर’ and ‘मात्रा’ to form words in the same way they lead children in the classroom. With stories, narrations and songs, students pick up the nuances and feel of languages experientially.
As parents discussed what literature they can introduce at home for children, they recalled their own experiences growing up with Amar Chitra Katha, Champak etc. Parents also explored different activities that engaged with a separate facet of learning language in Shikshantar at the primary level. They reconnected with Hindi through riddles, games, storywriting and creative roleplay to then share with the group at large.
It prompted reflection from parents who further spoke on how these activities could help children learn. A parent shared that it was a “good experience on how to make children more interested in language in a playful way”.
