Our Planet Earth

Class II children recently explored the theme ‘Our Planet Earth’. They began with a near to far journey from Me → Shikshantar → Gurugram → Earth towards the Solar System and micro visualization of the different landforms such as rivers, mountains, plateaus, oceans, and deserts. The Question Bank corner related to the theme also sparked their curiosity, fostering a sense of enquiry, interest and awareness.

Through nature walks, circle time discussions and hands-on experience of burying different man-made and natural material in soil, children discovered that Earth can “digest” some material but not others. This helped them to conclude the difference between biodegradable and non-biodegradable material. Building further on their understanding, children explored the concept of the 6 Rs — Reuse, Recycle, Rethink, Reduce, Repair, and Refuse. In the extended experience of research at home, children actively interacted with their family members and contributed their observations and sharings. Children enthusiastically participated in a hands-on experience of “Kabad se Jugaad,” where they co-created something new using waste material and proudly presented their creations, sharing their ideas, creativity and teamwork.

As a part of their art experience, children also engaged in a mud walk, where they walked barefoot on wet soil. This sensory experience helped them to connect deeply with nature as they explored how the Earth feels beneath their feet, imagining the experience of roots growing within the soil.

The theme culminated with a thoughtful creative writing experience wherein the children reflected on their connect with Earth and made an inner resolve to care for Our Planet Earth in their own thoughtful way.
