Our Green Friends
The theme of ‘Plants’ began with a Nature Walk around the school where Class III children
keenly observed their green friends - plants and their parts. These walks turned into
opportunities to sharpen observation skills and build an understanding of the different ‘Parts of
a Plant’ and their unique roles.
Exploring fruits and vegetables from the kitchen had helped them discover the ‘Edible Parts of a
Plant’. Through questioning and reasoning, they learned to differentiate between fruits and
vegetables.
The theme then evolved into ‘Classification of Plants’ - identifying climbers, creepers, herbs,
shrubs and trees. Children made insightful observations during their nature walks, noticing
examples like the mango tree, lemon and hibiscus shrubs, madhu malti, money plant and mint
around Shikshantar.
Curiosity led them to ask, “What do plants eat?” This opened the door to exploring
photosynthesis, where they understood the role of leaves as the plant’s kitchen and illustrated
their learning beautifully.
The children’s bond with their green friends found creative expression through writing, many
imagining themselves as a mango tree or a hibiscus shrub, becoming one with the plant world.
