80th Independence Day Celebrations
The Shikshantar family gathered today to witness history unfolding layer by layer as we celebrated India's 80th Independence Day. The celebration was a living testament to our school’s philosophy, where history is not just memorised but deeply felt, questioned, and understood through creative expression. Children thoughtfully explored the timeline of India’s flags, understood their historical significance, and developed a deeper sense of unity and respect for the nation through various activities.
In Vanar Years, children connected to Independence Day and the symbols of India through role plays, songs and stories. Their involvement was visible in the creative movements by the Bhoomi group as they enacted the national symbols of the peacock, tiger and lotus. Sharing about the meaning of independence, the little ones eagerly pitched in - “Independence का मतलब होता है झंडा फहराना”, “अपने से अच्छे से काम करना”.
The atmosphere was charged with the timeless spirit of our children of Class II, mapping India's diverse landscapes through the power of song ‘This land is my land, ऊँचे हिमालय से कन्याकुमारी तक... स्वर संगम की श्रृंखला को आगे बढ़ाते हुए ...’. The voices of students blended seamlessly in a stirring rendition of We Shall Overcome and ‘कदम कदम बढ़ाए जा...’, highlighting India's unwavering secular path and reminding us all that we are always there for each other. The iconic वंदेमातरम् represented the Partition of Bengal.
The core of today's celebration was a student-led exploration of the ‘Evolution of our National Flag’, its colours and symbols by Class VI. Through a medley of songs, the heritage deepened as they shared about the 150th anniversary of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s visionary expressions.
Students traced the history of the design choices - lotus (कमल), stars (सितारे), and peacock feathers along with red and green as the colours of the flag by our visionaries. Students demonstrated early flag versions using beautiful origami lotuses, explaining how the initial layout of a red strip on top, green at the bottom, and yellow in the middle adorned with the sun and stars served as an early एकता का प्रतीक .
The historical journey moved vividly through time to 1917, capturing the Home Rule movement led by Annie Besant and Bal Gangadhar Tilak, with a flag featuring alternating red and green bands alongside the crescent and stars. The timeline then shifted to 1921, where students explained how Mahatma Gandhi added a white strip along with the चरखा to signify मेहनत का मान with the red and green bands, creating what was widely known as the Congress Flag.
The evolution culminated in 1931, when the definitive केसरिया (saffron), white, and green layout was adopted, declaring that the flag belonged to no single party but to every single Indian. The presentation struck an emotional chord as it neared July 1947, when the चरखा transitioned into the अशोक चक्र. Students powerfully concluded that as the wheel turned, our राष्ट्रीय ध्वज truly became the soul of a free nation, flying high today over every Indian home.
Sharing her most valuable thoughts and feelings, Minoti Didi expressed deep gratitude to our parents, didis, bhaiyas, Marsh Mellow, plants and trees for nurturing us. She asked everyone to spend a silent minute sending our heartfelt wishes to children worldwide who do not have what we have.
