Shikshantar celebrated its ninth birthday this year. Each year children take this opportunity to strengthen their connections with Shikshantar and the world around them through experiences in Art, Science, Maths or Languages. This year ‘Science’ was the focus of exploration and study. Our first ‘Science Exposition’ was organised on Tuesday, 27th of September 2011.
Science as a systematic study that includes observations, questioning, interpretation and analysis is found in Shikshantar in various forms and degrees. There is Science of History, as there is History of Science! What goes into making our shoes? What is the role of science in musical instruments? How do different kinds of materials used affect our art? Where did the dinosaurs go? How are shadows made? Who are some of the known scientists and inventors? Where all in my home can I find Science? Is Science really a boon or can it become a bane as well? ...these are some of the questions/ideas/thoughts/areas our children explored and studied at their own levels. Themes and project activities were structured in such a way that children could be actively involved in the entire process. They worked in small groups and created models, charts, posters and write ups. Children were also involved in handling the displays and corners. |
