The School amphitheatre echoed with sounds of clapping and cheering as children put their hands together and sang along with members of ‘Solar Punch’. Brightness of the sun added warmth and joy to the entire atmosphere. Shikshantar invited Solar Punch, a solar powered eco rock band from New York, for an interactive music session with children of classes III – XI, on 18th of November 2011. The mission of this band is to create awareness about environment and climate through music and lyrics. All the electric requirements for the band’s performance are met by solar power generated through solar panels erected on a van accompanying the band. Members of the band sensitized children about the need for finding solutions to climatic and environmental concerns. They touched upon specific issues like the gulf oil spill, water conservation, alternative sources of energy and the need to reduce, recycle and reuse. Between their songs they made demonstrations about solar energy and how they created guitar picks out of used CD discs. An interaction was also organised between the band members and children of classes VIII and IX. They responded to questions such as, how effective they had been in their mission, how did they all come together and what were the languages they could sing in. ‘Solar Punch’ concluded this interaction by encouraging children to create their own solar powered band. |
